Dialysis Catheter
A dialysis catheter is a medical device used to access a patient’s bloodstream for dialysis treatment when permanent vascular access (such as an arteriovenous (AV) fistula or graft) is not yet available, or when temporary access is needed due to medical conditions, surgery, or other factors.
The catheter is inserted into a large vein, typically in the neck (jugular vein), chest (subclavian vein), or groin (femoral vein), and provides a pathway for blood to be drawn out of the body for filtration and then returned after dialysis treatment. It serves as an essential part of both hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in specific situations.
