A cholera bed is a special type of hospital bed designed for patients suffering from cholera, a severe diarrheal disease caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Because cholera leads to massive loss of fluids through diarrhea, quick and continuous fluid management is crucial.

Here’s what defines a cholera bed:

Waterproof Material: The bed is made of waterproof material (often plastic or coated canvas) stretched over a frame (wood or metal).

Hole in the Center: There is a hole in the middle of the bed, positioned under the patient’s buttocks.

Collection Bucket: A bucket or container is placed underneath the hole to collect watery diarrhea (“rice water stools”) for measurement.

Fluid Management: Measuring the volume of fluid lost helps guide how much rehydration therapy (oral or intravenous) the patient needs.
