Etching refers to the process of applying an acidic material—usually phosphoric acid—to the surface of enamel or dentin to prepare the tooth for bonding. The etchant creates microscopic roughness (micro-porosities) that allows adhesive resins or composite materials to bond strongly to the tooth structure.
